What Drives Us: The Hidden Purpose of Our Behaviours
Have you ever wondered why certain behaviours, even the ones we label as “destructive,” persist in our lives?
From procrastination to addictions, our actions often feel like obstacles to the life we want. But what if they serve a hidden purpose?
Every behaviour, no matter how unhelpful it might seem, exists to fulfil a need. These patterns are our mind and body’s way of coping, protecting, or surviving.
An addiction might provide relief from emotional pain, while avoidance could shield us from the fear of failure. Eckhart Tolle says addictions begin in pain, are an attempt to run from pain and end in pain. When we view these behaviours as functional rather than flawed, we open the door to true transformation. Instead of fighting against them, we can explore the unmet needs they’re fulfilling and learn healthier ways to meet those needs.
By doing so, we create an opportunity to move beyond shame and judgment into curiosity and compassion. True growth happens when we stop asking, “What’s wrong with me?” and start asking, “What is this behaviour trying to achieve?”
Ready to begin this deeper inquiry into yourself? My book, Intuition: The Science of Self, is designed to guide you through exercises that uncover the layers behind your behaviours.
Together, we’ll explore how to meet your true needs without relying on old patterns.
